Digital Hearing Aids and Styles

All hearing aids provided at Estes Audiology are thelatest advances in the industry.  The range of technology is varied and recommendations for which type of digital hearing solution is best for an individual is based on each person’s unique hearing loss and communication needs.

Estes Audiology carries several styles and brands of hearing aids, and will work with you to provide the best fit for your needs and lifestyle. Daily wear styles of hearing aids include:

  • In-The-Ear (ITE) hearing aids fit in  area called the concha, which is the outer ear.  ITE devices are custom made from a mold taken of an individual’s ear.  This model of hearing aid can be used in different degrees of hearing loss.  Feedback cancellation and background noise reduction are advances in the industry that are included in many models.  In-The-Canal (ITC) aids are similar, smaller devices that fit in the bottom half of the bowl of the ear. These models are not easily seen when in the ear.  ITC and Completely-In-The-Canal (CIC) aids are the least custom model of hearing aid.  
  • Behind-The-Ear (BTE) hearing aids are also used for different degrees of hearing loss.  The electrical components are located outside the ear, reducing the chance of damage from moisture and earwax, which can help the hearing aid last longer.  BTEs have become smaller and lighter over the past few years and are barely noticeable behind the ear, or not noticeable when hair is covering the devices.  BTEs can be fit as an “Open Fit“, meaning they do not always require a custom ear piece.  In some cases an ear mold, fit to an individual’s ear is necessary for the best result to be attained from a BTE hearing aid.
  • Receiver-In-The-Ear (RIC) hearing aids are BTE devices that place the speaker directly in the ear without a fitted ear mold. Improved sound quality can be an advantage to RIC devices, which “open-fit” technology, providing shorter time between ordering the aids and the fitting, if any additional time is needed.

CROS and BICROS Hearing Aids

CROS and BICROS hearing aids are innovative technology that allows a user with profound or complete hearing loss in one ear to hear sounds from the non-hearing side in the better ear.  They system sends sound wirelessly from the non-hearing side (via a CROS transmitter) to a discreet hearing aid (receiver) on the hearing ear.  No longer do you have to miss something said on the ‘wrong’ side.  No more will you have to say “talk in to my good ear”.

  • CROS and BICROS Hearing AidsWith a CROS hearing aid, the transmitter, which is placed behind or inside your poorer ear, picks up sound and transmits it wirelessly to the normal hearing ear. The hearing in your good ear will remain natural and completely unaffected.
  • With a BICROS hearing aid, the transmitter, which is placed behind or inside your poorer ear, picks up sound and transmits it wirelessly to the better hearing ear. At the same time, the receiving hearing aid also serves as an amplifier improving hearing in that ear.
