Songs for Sound , a charity dedicated to improving the quality of life for the 360 million people worldwide suffering from hearing loss, brings its Hearoes tour and free hearing screenings to Texas Hill Country Oct. 10-14.
These Songs for Sound awareness raising events will provide free hearing screenings, information, equipment demos and offer giveaways in the Songs for Sound mobile center at the Austin YMCA (1000 W. Rundberg Lane) on Saturday, Oct. 10 and at the Estes Audiology Clinic in New Braunfels ( 1528 Common Street) on Tuesday, Oct. 13 and Wednesday, Oct. 14. Screenings will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Songs for Sound’s Hearoes tour is in the midst of its 12-week mobile campaign bringing its sponsor-branded screening vehicle around the country visiting air shows, schools and clinics reaching over 5 million people to help raise awareness around hearing health.
“Hearing loss purpose is deeply personal for me,” said Songs for Sound founder Jaime Vernon, whose seven-year-old daughter, Lexi, is a cochlear transplant recipient. “My deaf child’s hearing and speech development was nearly deraile d with an initial ‘let’s wait’ reaction.”
Vernon notes that recent studies show that 50% of children who fail a newborn screen and reside in rural communities will not return for follow up services. Military veterans are also greatly afflicted with hearing loss, the number one disability of military returning from overseas. 60% of veterans post-911 suffer from hearing loss. “Our mission is to broaden the impact with awareness, advocacy and access and assist incredible hearing and speech programs such as Estes Audiology Clinic, and create opportunities for support for additional needs such as social workers, scholarships for speech therapy, devices and more.”
The Hear the Music tour is sponsored by Cochlear Americas , a global provider of hearing implantable technologies such as cochlear implants, and Phonak , a global provider of hearing technologies such as hearing aids.
